STRUCTURE OF MEALS IN PARIS
Breakfast
Breakfast is the speciality of the city`s cafes with many open early to serve the population (or early rising visitor) before they head off to work or the hopefully short museum queue. "Le petit dejeuner" traditionally comprises of Croissants or tartines (sliced French bread) with jelly or jam with the delicious "pain au chocolat" (A pastry filled with chocolate) being a further favourite - all freshly baked and served with coffee or tea - The smell alone is worth getting up early for on a chilly morning.
Lunch
Traditionally the Parisians have taken a two hour lunch "Le dejeuner" break, with many eating at the company or school/college supplied cafeteria. Office workers have also regularly been supplied with vouchers for use at local restaurants as part of their employment package. Shorter lunch breaks have become more common these days and on fine days it is not unusual to see many enjoying a takeaway or packed lunch in one of the cities many centrally located parks - On a fine day the visitor could do much worse than by following suit, perhaps with some fine cheese, tomatoes and a fresh baguette washed down with some sparkling water or perhaps a glass of wine.
"Al fresco" restaurant/pavement lunching is one of the best and therefore compulsory things to do in Paris - restaurants are normally open from noon till about 2.30am but may be closed on Saturdays and Mondays during the lunch period.
Evening Meal
Dinner "Le diner" traditionally comprises three courses staring with the hors d`ouvre or entrée and followed by the main course - plate principal - with the sweet or cheese course to follow. The meals are traditionally accompanied by wine and bottled water although fruit juice is becoming an ever more popular alternative. Restaurants usually open relatively late at 7.30pm for dinner and cease taking orders after the hours of 10-11pm. Traditionally many of the top restaurants in Paris close on a Sunday, but it is always possible to find a good venue for dining, especially amongst the pizzerias and other ethnically themed restaurants.
